Oldies in Newy

Visiting Newcastle in New South Wales for the first time in 2017 I was struck by the changes it is going through. Since arriving for a longer stay at the start of 2019 I’ve been noticing the contrast of old buildings amongst the new.

I learned that the city was transformed violently 30 years ago by the earthquake and in addition to the human loss and trauma that caused, some much loved places were lost, and others rebuilt.

As I’m an outsider, I know nothing of the pictured buildings’ origins or history. Some are still in their prime, some may be destined for re-invention and renovation, and some for demolition. This is a visitor’s eye view of the way things are right now in the city.

I’m building a series of these images, and this gallery page will show a selection that changes and evolves over time.
