Cuban Cars
According to our guide on a tour of Havana way more than half of all cars in Cuba are still pre-revolution (mostly) American imports. In the city there are modern taxis and other more recent Chinese and Japanese cars, trucks and busses imported since 2011. Out in the countryside though the fifties still rule.
Our tour was conducted in a huge Pontiac; red, shiny and updated with led lamps and modern aircon. This is the norm for taxiing tourists around. The privately run cars are also generally well cared for, but can be less shiny and missing bits of chrome trim. That they still exist and are running around after 70 years is a testament to Cuban engineering skill and resourcefulness.
These pictures are a well-worn cliche. Surely every visitor will take at least one shot like this. All the same I found the cars an irresistible subject for photos, so cliche or not here are some of mine.
