To The Underground

28 August 2023

Oh dear, another month and nothing posted.

Here’s my take on a well-photographed location; a tunnel leading to King’s Cross tube station which is lit by ever-changing coloured lights and surprisingly devoid of advertising.

Ah! Vienna

31 July 2023

Speaking of great coffee, and a lack of recent posts, here’s a picture from last month’s holiday in Vienna. I guess that since we also briefly visited Zurich and Graz I should also post a couple more from that trip before other more current stuff pushes it out.

Note to self- must keep up.

Happy Place

29 July 2023

How can it be that I haven’t posted a picture here for two months? And why, now that I’ve finally got around to it, is a picture of a cappuccino the best I can muster?

Answer – I like the composition. There are some subtle leading lines, and the back of the stool echoes the curve of the saucer. It was taken for my 52 Frames challenge ‘Meaningful Location’.

More importantly, I love this place and its coffee. It has been a ‘Meaningful Location’ for 30+ years of happy get-togethers with friends and family.

Bird on a String

27 May 2023

A birthday present visit yesterday to the Raptor Foundation at Woodhurst set the challenge to capture some amazing birds in flight.

Many of the resulting 1200+ frames contain blurry smudges or pictures of the air where a bird used to be.

This picture of Liz Blows and Onyx the Perigrine Falcon was one of the good ones.

Whitby Gothic

13 May 2023

The ruined cliff-top abbey at Whitby, with its Dracula association radiates gloom and foreboding in black and white.

Soft Focus

25 April 2023

Supposedly Henri Cartier-Bresson told Helmut Newton that “Sharpness is a bourgeois concept”.

This was taken using the widest aperture of a lens made for soft focus, so it couldn’t be sharp.

As well as the overall dreamy blur of the whole picture, the soft glow around the flowers made me want to share it.

Blue Hour

23 April 2023

Ely Cathedral, looking calm and majestic. I posted this in my 52 Frames set, but I like it enough to show it here too. It isn’t that exciting as a composition, but I feel I’ve got the twilight atmosphere right with just a little post-production tweaking.
