Lily
31 March 2022
A second go at a flower in soft focus; this time in black and white.
Still not entirely successful, with the depth of field in the ‘sweet spot’ being just a bit too shallow.
Unfortunately all my models in this bouquet are now compost but with spring now springing there should be plenty more to photograph soon.
Gerbera
23 March 2022
An experiment with the soft-focus look using a Lensbaby Composer plus a macro extension tube.
It’s tricky to pick an aperture and an angle to the flower that creates enough of an in-focus ‘sweet spot’ plus a really blurry outer edge.
A bit more fiddling and fettling required I think, but I like the effect enough to keep trying.
The Sacrist's Gate
26 February 2022
This 14th century gatehouse in Ely’s High Street is described in some places on-line as the tradesman’s entrance to the Cathedral.
I was intrigued to find out that it can be rented as a home, and has a small private garden too. I think that the iron-hinged gothic door inside the arch is the front entrance to the house.
The grotesque on the wall looks to me like a muppet monk, heckling passers by.
The Red Boots
30 January 2022
The Red Shoes is a Hans Christian Andersen story, a 1948 film and a Kate Bush album.
The Red Boots are worn by a Molly Dancer (from Bungay I think), performing a broom dance. Brooms seem to be a popular accessory for dances around here.
This was taken at the Mark Jones Day of Dance in Ely.
Music in the Market
20 January 2022
I guess my new year resolution to get out and take more photos is beginning to bite. Maybe it will last more than just a week or two.
Jacen Bruce is often at the marketplace in Ely with a repertoire that includes the Everlys, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Sam Cooke and everything between. A coffee at Silver Oak is always fantastic, but even better with him as a soundtrack.
