Plough Monday
12 January 2022
This week began with Plough Monday, an old tradition in Fenland and further afield. As the new agricultural year begins and the farm workers are in a poor way and in need of sustenance they entertain the townsfolk in return for food and beer. The Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival is the best-known local manifestation of this but it was sadly cancelled this year.
Here is the energetic Mepal Molly side making merry outside The Fountain in Ely on a tour of local schools and (mostly) pubs.
The ‘hands on sticks’ are keeping the dancers socially distanced.
Season's Greetings

Another interesting Sunday photo shoot with Zara Matthews. This time the topic was Winter Lights, Bokeh and Sparkle. Spent a busy couple of hours taking pictures around Picadilly Circus.
On the way home I found time to get this very distorted image of the King’s Cross Station Christmas Tree using my Lensbaby lens. The concourse roof makes a great background.
Sundown

Here’s a recent Roswell Pits picture.
Capturing the picture was just a bonus. Being there and watching the clouds and light change as the sunset progressed was worth the little trouble it took to nip over there with the camera and point it in the right direction while nature did the rest. At this time of year the sun sets behind Ely Cathedral and makes the spectacle especially rewarding to watch as it unfolds.
