If you want to get ahead

16 March 2021

Almost a month with nothing new to post.

I’ve raided the archive again to find this one. I rarely attempt street photography but this was a lucky moment when it all came together.

The picture was taken in Hamilton, a suburb of Newcastle NSW, in 2016.

Parkside Swimmers

21 February 2021

I have probably walked past these sculpted figures on the corner of Mill Road and Gonville Place hundreds of times without realising they were there. I spotted them about a week ago. The bare trees make them easier to see at this time of year.

They are designed by a sculptor named Betty Rea but the work was completed and erected posthumously in 1966. Ever since then they have been staring at each other on their plynth beside Parkside Pool. The mural behind them was painted recently by street artist Giacomo Bufarini, alias RUN.

Pots and POTS

29 January 2021

The lockdown somewhat limits opportunities for going out to take pictures so I took this through the front window of my house.

The telegraph pole was part of the Post Office Telephone System (POTS) or these days the Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) as the copper wire network is known colloquially. In the background are some pots of the chimney variety.

It isn’t a masterpiece but it was worth it just for the chance to juxtapose the two types of pots.

Winter Blues

19 January 2021

I left the house today for the first time in almost three weeks, and found a world that reminded me of this old shot I took in 2016.

Cambridge seems monochrome, and the few people I saw all seemed down, defeated and smeared into their surroundings.

A dry day and a ray of sunshine is needed to give everything and everyone a lift.

California Dreaming

3 January 2021

Since I have contracted Covid-19 to start the year, things can only get better as the year progresses (I hope).

As well as being in Tier 4 lockdown, meaning little chance to go out, I must now isolate for 10 days. That means no chance at all to go out.

All the more opportunity to revisit old photos and post this one of San Francisco from late 2019. See fnnch.com for more of his work.

Happy New Year!
