Midsummer/Midwinter

20 December 2020

A great morning to be out for a walk and breathe in some fresh (tier 2) air in Cambridge without visiting the shops.

Midsummer Common, along the riverbank, is picturesque any time but finding one of the boats sporting tiny Christmas trees made for a pretty photo.

Three Faces

13 December 2020

I came across this arrangement of three faces in the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in 2018. I like the contrast in their styles and expressions; each must have been made to communicate something different.

Ashamed to say I can’t now remember anything about the origins of any of these artefacts, so like me you’ll have to go along to see them if you want to know.

Grantchester Meadows

23 November 2020

Another tree photo? I feel I’m beginning to repeat myself (see below and previous page). My only other successful shot from this morning walk at Grantchester featured a tree AND a cow so that would have been a double repeat.

I think lockdown is beginning to get to me, my photographic repertoire seems to be shrinking just like the rest of day-to-day life!

Wall of Death

16 November 2020

One more picture rescued from the past, all the way back to 2016. Here we see three highly skilled, brave maniacs racing around a tiny drum for the amusement of onlookers. This was taken at the Haddenham Steam Rally. As with everything else the rally didn’t take place in 2020 but hopefully returns next September as good as ever. It’s already in my diary.

Trees, Path, Fake Sky

1 November 2020

The latest version of Photoshop automates replacing the sky in a picture. This is fabulous if you’re an estate agent wanting to show-off houses as if the sun always shines on them, but pretty pointless otherwise. I like to choose to photograph landscapes when the sky is interesting rather than snap away on a dull day and then replace the sky with another photographer’s fabulous sunset.

However… here’s just such a composite. I apologise for having double standards. I thought it would make this picture of autumn in the Botanic Gardens interesting enough to post if the original flat, bright overcast sky had a bit more texture to it so I’ve used Photoshop’s sky replacement to throw a cloudy sky behind the trees. The whole thing is done with a couple of clicks. The result is more or less as good as Tree, Path, Cyclist below which is not faked.

BTW this is a phone photo (Galaxy S20) and not from my DSLR.
